There are many
products that Mall Silks offers that still
have not been built since I joined the team
at Mall Silks. However, Mall Silks just
recently completed a project for Texas
A&M University that scratched a few more
off of the list. The unusual items were
large versions of some of our most popular
products at Mall Silks right now. Among the
large items that were constructed for the
project were 2 – 10' Marginata trees
(made on real dragonwood trunks), several
large Ruscus topiaries over
10' (also made on natural Dragonwood
trunks), 2 – Shady Lady Olive Trees
(made on natural maple wood trunks), and a
beautiful 12' Weeping Oak Tree (made
using natural dragonwood trunks. There were
a lot of smaller items that were built as
part of the project as well including
several fern trees and artificial palm
trees. The plants and trees will be used to
decorate a conference room and main student
areas at the Texas A&M University -
Commerce, TX location.
The plants and
containers for the project were delivered
directly to the site for installation and
were installed before an upcoming event
scheduled at the campus. The products were
expertly crafted by our design center ahead
of schedule and shipped out early. The
construction of some of the items caught the
eye of several other Mall Silks clients and
Plantscape, Inc. sales personnel. Other
projects have been sold as a result of their
noticing these magnificent large replica
plants.

Mall Silks has
bee recognized as a leader for many years
when it comes to fabricating large
artificial trees. A product that Mall Silks
has produced for many years is artificial
Birch trees. The artificial birch trees
are made using natural Birch tree trunks and
artificial Birch foliage. The natural trunks
are harvested locally in the Pittsburgh area
(like many of our other natural trunks) and
are brought back to our facility to be
checked for insects and are kept in a dry
environment for many weeks before they are
used for construction. The trunks are
organized by size and type for inventory
purposes. They are dried in our warehouse so
that they have less potential for cracking
when they are used for tree construction.
In addition to
the standard green Birch tree
foliage, Mall Silks also stocks an
orange/yellow fall Birch foliage that
has become more popular with clients in
recent years. The birch foliage is available
in a fire retardant option as well. Birch
trees can be made from 5’ up to 25’ tall
with single or multiple trunks. Like all
of our trees that we build using real wood
trunks, the Birch trees can also be made to
be installed in containers or flush mounted
to a concrete floor using a custom steel
base plate.

Over the years,
one thing that continues to be an issue with our
large trees is that interior maintenance techs
and janitorial personnel water them. I
guess that is a good sign that we are doing our
job of creating the most life-like silk trees
available if we are able to fool
professionals. However, I think that sometimes,
the maintenance person just does not realize
that the tree is artificial when they see a real
tree trunk.
As most of you
probably know, our large trees are sold
including a weighted base. The base is made
custom for each tree depending on the type of
installation. When a large tree is shipped to
its final destination for install, the base
ships separately from the trunks as it can be
quite heavy. The base is installed on site
either in a container or in a planter bed and
then the individual trunks are inserted into PVC
sleeves in the base and secured in
place. Because there is space between the trunk
and the PVC sleeve, there is a potential for
water to be poured into the gap (especially if
there are live plantings around the base of the
tree).
Over time, if
no provision has been made to keep water out,
any water that makes it into the base can rot
the trunks and cause the trunk to collapse. This
can cause structural and or physical liability
issues. As a precaution, Mall Silks always sends
cable with its large trees so that during the
initial installation of the tree, the trunks are
cabled together for stability and they help to
support each other if one trunk fails. Also, we
recommend that this information be passed along
to the servicing technician or janitorial staff
that is maintaining the space to avoid any
problems with watering. Also, if there is a live
planting installed around the base of a tree,
make sure to put some type of barrier between
the plants and the trunks of the artificial tree
so that there is no possibility of water
entering the base. If you need any further
