Yes, Mall
Silks does ship projects internationally.
This month’s project profile focuses on a
project installed in Canada at the South
Center Mall by Evergreen Services, Inc. Our
Design Center worked very hard to meet a
strict deadline for this project. The
install had to be completed before the new
section of the Mall was opened. The project
was installed in the upscale shopping mall
in Calgary during the second week of March.
The project consisted of 90 custom olive
hedges built to specifications to fit into
pre-built onsite planters. There were a
total of 3 types of hedges that made up the
total project. Most of the hedges were 4'
long by 31" tall and were used to line the
second story railing at the mall. There were
two types of 4' hedges; one using yellow
flowers as an accent color and one type
using lavender flowers as an accent color.
There were also 12 custom U-shaped hedges
that had to be created to fit around
artificial trees that were also going to be
installed on the project by Evergreen
Services. This project involved using almost
2500 Olive picks and took almost 350 man
hours to complete. The international
freight was arranged and the project
materials were delivered and installed in
plenty of time. Mall Silks has shipped

Canada, the Bahamas, Africa, England, and

Mall Silks
continues to add additional products to its
custom made items on real wood. This month,
we would like to showcase a new product
developed for a client. We refer to it as
our “Wild Bamboo”. To produce this product,
we harvest real bamboo stalks and leave the
natural stems attached to the bamboo poles.
We set the bamboo into a grow pot like all
of our products and then begin to attached
individual artificial bamboo stems to the
plant. In addition to adding artificial
stems, we also attach individual leaves to
the original stems from the plant. This
process is very labor intensive but it helps
to create the most life-like artificial
bamboo that we have produced to date. As a
result of the added labor, this product is
not cheap, but it does achieve the life-like
look that many of our clients (and yours)
desire when they are looking for
alternatives to live material. This product
can be made up to about 25’ tall and can be
installed in various ways as well. If you

At Mall Silks, we
get quite a few inquiries about how to clean
artificial silk products. The answer is not
necessarily the same for all situations. Silk
products will need to be cleaned more often when
they are in a high traffic area. Dust buildup
is more severe in shopping malls and heavy
traffic commercial spaces such as banks and
hotels. In these environments, we suggest that
a routine dusting be accomplished at least once
per month by maintenance personnel and a
thorough cleaning accomplished twice per year
using a professional grade silk cleaner. In
other situations, once per year may be
sufficient. Make sure to purchase a silk
cleaner that is a “drip dry” solution to
minimize cleaning labor time. If the over spray
and the run off from the spraying of the cleaner
is going to fall on the floor, be sure to cover
the floor or remove the plant and take it
outdoors or somewhere that the overspray will
not damage any fixtures or décor. Because this
process can be very labor intensive, we
recommend that a budget for routine cleaning be
discussed with the owner of the material before
silk materials are installed. For large tree
cleaning, a large drop cloth will need to be
placed around the base of the tree to cover any
flooring, furniture, or fixtures below and the
cleaner sprayed over the top of the foliage.
This may require a large ladder, an aerial lift
(for very large trees) and possible night time
cleaning for high traffic retail spaces. We
recommend performing cleaning services on an
hourly basis as it is difficult to estimate and
exact amount of time it will take. Make sure to
discuss this with your client up front as
routine cleaning is very important to make sure
that your silk materials last as long as
possible and look great for many years to come.
