This
month, we feature a project that
recently shipped to Seattle, WA.
This project has been in the works for
about a year. Mall Silks was initially
contacted by an architectural firm in
Seattle, WA concerning the fabrication
of multiple large artificial trees for a
commercial building. But, they also
needed someone to install them. So,
Botanical Designs in Seattle, WA was
brought on board to oversee the
installation of the trees. Botanical
Designs met with the client and then
contracted Mall Silks to build 7
artificial, IFR, Shady Lady Olive
trees. Our design team built a
first tree (a prototype) that was to be
sent and reviewed by the design team in
charge of the building. Before the
prototype was sent all the way across
the country, the designers for the
project came to Pittsburgh to meet with
Mall Silks and review the
construction of the tree. After all of
the specifics were ironed out, the
remaining five trees were built. The
remaining trees were shipped about 2
weeks ago and were to be installed the
following week. This project included a
total of 7 trees that were built using
more than 20 large maple trunks,
multiple additional fabricated branches
per tree, almost 175,000 inherently fire
retardant leaves and took more than 175
man hours to build. It took a total of
3 semi trucks to send the trees over
2,000 miles away from Pittsburgh. To

The Ruscus
forms made by Mall Silks are one of our best
selling products. They are part of our
trees on real trunks product line. The
Ruscus forms are made using real
dragonwood and grape wood trunks
(depending on the form) and delicate
artificial Ruscus leaves. They can be made
in
tree,
bush,
topiary
and
bonsai
forms. The small and compact leaves make
this plant very full. The trunks are
harvested from the southeastern US and are
brought to our facility to be checked for
insects. They go through a drying process
before they are used for production. Like
all of our other real trunks, the dragonwood
and grape wood trunks are all stored in a
dry facility so that they are not exposed to
insects, mold, or moisture. This helps to
insure their long lasting ability when they
are installed. We also offer a Fire
Retardant option for the Ruscus
foliage. Like all of our trees made real
trunks, the Ruscus are custom made by our
artists when they are ordered. Because each
tree is made individually with different
trunks and by different artists, they are
all a one of a kind creation.
Ruscus trees,
bushes
and
topiaries
can be made from 2’ up to 16’ tall in a
multi-trunk fashion. The
Ruscus bonsai
on grape wood can be made from small 9”
bonsai up to 6’ in height. Like all of Mall
Silks’ trees on real trunks, the Ruscus can
be made to your custom specifications as
well.

Often times our
products are purchased for rental purposes. Some of
the types of companies that rent our products
are interior landscapers, florists, event
planners, and even movie production companies.
For Mall Silks clients, this can be a very
lucrative addition to your business. Artificial
plants and trees used for rentals typically cost
about the same as live plants used for a year
long period of time, especially if you figure in
the cost of maintenance. It may even be a
little more for the live plants. This being
said, the quality of artificial plants and trees
has in recent years become so good that they are
a more than acceptable substitute for live
rental plants. Also, if they are taken care of
and routinely cleaned, they can last for many
years. Most plant rentals are for weekend or
single evening events and most of the time the
event planner just wants something that is nice
and is green. |

Why not give
them a quality artificial plant that is more
durable and that you do not have to water or
maintain during the rental period! Because they
last longer than live plants, you can rent them
for less and still make the same amount of money
over the life of the plant. If you decide to
add silk plant rentals to your products and
services, keep it simple. Stock about 10-20
Ficus trees 6-7’, choose 3 types of floor plants
and have 10 or so of each type ready to go, and pick
2-3 types of small blooming plants or ferns.
You could even mix and match artificial trees
and floor plants with live blooming plants as
well. The key to a successful rental program is
to have a good quantity of quality plants ready
to go at a moments notice. If you would like
