This month, we
feature a project that went to California.
At the beginning of August, Mall Silks
received a call from Creative Plant
Designs out of San Jose, CA. (an
interiorscape company) concerning yet
another significant bamboo project
out of many during 2009. The bamboo was to
be installed in a shopping mall in
California. The most difficult part of this
project was the last minute time line. An
initial sample was made and sent air freight
overnight to Creative Plant Designs so that
they could present it to their client. The
bamboo assembly was approved and the order
was signed for a large number of 6' custom
bamboo plants and several -10' custom bamboo
plants at the end of August. Usually Mall
Silks requests a lead time of 4-6 weeks on
an order of this size, but made an exception
on this project to accommodate the needs of
the client. In order to get the order to
Creative Plant Designs in time, the order
had to be shipped the middle of
September. This only gave us 3 weeks to
complete the large order. The materials for
the project included over 400 bamboo poles,
more than 3,000 artificial bamboo branches,
and over 130 labor hours to complete. The
Mall Silks design center completed it on
time and even fulfilled a last minute
request from Creative Plant Designs for 5
additional custom bamboo plants just days
before the order shipped out. The items were
shipped out on time and the job was a

The
Shady Lady Olive trees
made by Mall Silks are by far the most
popular tree that we make. Our Shady Ladies
have been shipped all over the U.S. and
Canada, and have been installed in many
prominent malls, commercial buildings,
schools, and even private residences.
These trees
are made using real maple or
myrtle tree trunks depending on the
client preference. The trunks are harvested
from different parts of the eastern United
States. They are brought to our facility to
be checked for insects and to go through a
drying process before they are used for
production. Like all of our other real
trunks, the maple trunks are all stored in a
dry warehouse facility so that they are not
exposed to insects, mold, or moisture to
insure their long lasting stability when
they are installed.
Mall Silks
uses Shady Lady Olive foliage that is very
realistic and botanically accurate. Mall
Silks also offers an IFR (Inherently Fire
Retardant) option for the Shady Lady
Olive foliage. We have had the foliage
independently tested to make sure that it
has passed the NFPA 701 flame testing. In
addition to the Shady Lady foliage, Mall
Silks offers many other IFR foliage options
for its various trees. IFR foliage is
perfect for medical facilities, commercial
buildings, malls, casinos, etc. where the
product is exposed to very high traffic or
may come in contact with a potential flame.
Also, as with
all of our trees made real trunks, this
tree is custom made by our artists when it
is ordered. Because each tree is made
individually with different trunks and by
different artists, they are all a
one-of-a-kind creation. Although this tree
looks great at any size, the larger they
are, the more interesting the branch
structure is. Shady Lady trees can be made
from 5' up to 25' tall in a multi-trunk
fashion and the Shady Lady foliage can be
used to make a bush, topiary or hedge forms
in many custom sizes and shapes. Like all of
our trees that we build using real wood
trunks, the Shady Lady Olive can also be
made to be installed in containers or flush
mounted to a concrete floor using a custom
steel base plate.

Many times, our
products are placed in high light areas and
clients ask if there is a solution to keep silk
products from fading or turning odd colors. Silk
foliage is a fabric and can be treated like
other fabrics. Many hotels and commercial
facilities use UV treatments to keep drapery and
furniture from fading and losing color over
time. This same process can be accomplished with
silk foliage as well. However, it does have to
be re-applied periodically depending on the
exposure of the foliage. Mall Silks can perform
an initial UV treatment on your products
when they are ordered that will last for 1-3
years depending on exposure. Re-treatment can
be done by using a variety of products that are
